 Foliage Memories

Fall foliage colors on a tree in Salem are nearly gone

Fall foliage colors on a tree in Salem

October is drawing to a close and as always, it leaves me feeling a bit sad. I know many of you feel the same way. In my case it feels like an old friend that has come for a short visit is packing up to leave and not be seen again until next year.
Some years this old friend sticks around for more than a month and other years (like this one) it seems that they just got here and they are already leaving. The only things we have left are the memories. If we’re lucky, we have images in our cameras to put on the computer screen or maybe print out for our wall.

Foliage update

Fall foliage colors on a tree in Salem are nearly gone

Rock wall with Fall foliage

Is there still color? Sure! (all the shots seen on today’s page I took on 26 Oct in or around Salem MA. You can also see it on my webcam page and right at the top of that page is a view off my deck where the maples, a poplar and a few sumac’s are still holding onto their color. I’m happy to say that this is true of many places around New England.

The color that is remaining is either protected like mine by hills surrounding the trees or it resides closer to bodies of water where the temperatures will remain warmer for a week or so (depending on the jet stream coming down from Canada). Tomorrow we are due to see rain/freezing rain or snow across much of New England and this could bring down much of the foliage that has turned.

A harvest moon

The only question mark will be the oak (and other) leaves that are still green (at least in my area) and the trees along the shore line that resisted the salt burn provided by Irene back in Sept.  All I know is in my area of Salem and Essex County, there is still a ton of green leaves and either they will turn late or just turn brown and drop… Only time will tell what we’re going to get.

I’m hoping that you will stop in from time to time and start a conversation on the foliage forum (on the top menu). I hope you’ll tell me what you found this season either in your travels in New England or in your home town. The folks who love foliage I’ve found, do so all the year round! So if you need a fall foliage fix I will be happy to talk leaves and photography all through turkey day to Christmas and into the following spring.

Remember I am an admin for the New England fall foliage-Vistaphotography Facebook page where you can share your images of fall color that you captured. You don’t have to be a professional photographer in fact I would rather enjoy seeing what everyone caught no matter what ability level or type of camera. We can either just enjoy what you caught or if you like we can discuss ways to improve your photographic technique.

My name is Jeff Folger,
but people call me Jeff Foliage.
I have several pages that I write blogs for such as:
My most popular blog is for Leaf peepers: Jeff
I live in Salem, Massachusetts and work as a blogger and Travel Photographer. I'm also the founder of the New England Photography Guild.
Feel free to visit me on my blogs and see what life in New England is like.

I started with Yankee Magazine as their first blogger on everything fall foliage. Now I blog on my own blog on my favorite subject, telling leaf peepers where the fall foliage is showing up in New England and helping them (to some extent) plan their fall foliage vacations.
