Exploring Jackson New Hampshire in Fall
What is there to see in Jackson New Hampshire?
Jackson NH is tops in my book, year-round!
Today I’m going to recommend Jackson NH as a great place to stop, stay or just explore. The things that put Jackson on my list are:
- Small village atmosphere
- Jackson Covered Bridge
- Ravenwood Curio Shoppe
- Wentworth Hotel
- shops (lots of shops)
- Restaurants
- Pumpkin people
- Jackson Falls also known as Wildcat Falls
Exploring Jackson can take from a few minutes to an entire weekend, it all depends on you.
Covered Bridge
This trip I caught a shot of the Honeymoon Covered Bridge #51, then got a cream soda out of the old coke machine on the front porch at Flossie’s Country Store. It’s not a “general store” but more just a gift shop, still well worth a visit.
Small Shops

Shops like Flossie’s makes for a fun afternoon looking for that special something to take home as a memento of your trip.
Ravenwood Curio Shoppe
Ravenwood is an eclectic art gallery in Jackson and you can find it on the main drag that runs through the town and right next door to the fire station.
I always tell folks to just go and look around, we just love to walk around and explore all the different corners of the place. It really is amazing. From stairways going up to doors that don’t go anywhere, to a full-size mermaid at the edge of a pool you will be amazed by all the visual eye candy to look at (or buy!!!)
Lisa and I love to stop into Ravenwood Curio Shoppe and just explore while trying to figure out how to get a mermaid into the car… Long story, just go and see for yourself.
Restaurants
From fine dining to down-home cooking, there are endless possibilities
Yesterday’s Restaurant
We’ve only eaten at Yesterday’s Restaurant once which was clean and had good prices and the bacon blue cheese burger was outstanding!
Lisa had a pumpkin bisque, sweet potato fries, and a homemade bread toasted cheese sandwich
Jackson Falls
I took a short ride up Carter Notch Road to Jackson Falls. It’s a short drive up (turn right at the Wentworth Hotel) and there is parking for several cars at the top.
Walking along the river is easy and very safe. The water flow wasn’t great on the day I was there but the rain was light that year. There are many benches to sit for a spell and just relax.
Pumpkin People
Later in October, you will find pumpkin people all over the place and if you choose to, you can vote for your favorite one. These are created by local businesses and have very elaborate themes that take days to create. This particular year, we found the Red Hat Society ladies enjoying the pub and grill. One year we found an astronaut.
Planning for Fall Color
Jackson New Hampshire, as well as North Conway NH, are usually showing good fall color the first week of October, but it all depends on how our temps are running. If we have a slow burn year (meaning slow to develop but long on staying on the trees, if no storms) Then you might drop back a week to the 10-13th of October.
If you see me posting articles or Facebook that Jackson and Conway are getting frosty nights in Late Sept then bring it forward a few days…
I know you are telling me, “But how can I plan for that???” Well, that is the crux of the problem. In 2019, the fall colors were awesome north of Jackson and Conway on the 12th, but Conway and points south didn’t get good until just after that, and after a big storm AND Columbus Day Weekend (CDW) ( or Indigenous Peoples Weekend (IPW) as it’s now becoming known in some states) was the 21st.
So you have to plan around CDW/IPW traffic and booked rooms. But the best color might be the week leading up to the 12th and… also after the 12th. My suggestion is to just pick your dates and enjoy what you do find. Oh! and of course, sign up and follow this blog for current info!

Love your reports – my favorite spot in NH is Jackson also – haven’t been there for 2 years when went with MN company in the pouring rain! (first of OCT.) They loved it anyway and are still talking about it. Am going to miss NH fall foliage this year down here (East Kingston -although, there are some very beautiful colors scattered here and there) as I will be in
Maryland for the peak. Keep doing what you do – photography of the beauty that surrounds us here in New England just makes me feel good! Priscilla
Thanks Priscilla, I will try but this having to have a job thing really cuts into getting out and photographing as much as I would like… I bet I’m not the only one to have this trouble. 🙂

Are there any fall foliage in Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Island, MA? We will be driving there this fall. We will be leaving the Tampa Bay, FL area on Saturday, October 4, and arriving in Marthar’s Vineyard the next evening. Then we will drive to Hershey, PA for a few days. Any sugestions for good places to see fall foleage in the are of our trip? Thanks for any suggestions. John and Lynda
I’m sure they have some fall colors but never having been to either one in the fall makes it difficult. Driving to either one is also difficult. I suggest taking the ferry or flying. I don’t think you can get up enough speed to leap from the Cape to MV or NT.. 🙂
I think as you drive back through MA you should stay off 90 and look for smaller roads. (if time permits) look at Sturbridge village and the Quabbin reservoir. Also in Stockbridge is the Norman Rockwell museum… You could drive up and catch the Mohawk trail and take that west into NY and across in to PA…

I will be traveling from albany ny to weston vt next weekend to check out the vermont country store and I was wondering if you had any suggestions on some spots to get some good foliage pictures along the way, we will be taking route 7 from ny into vermont and then route 11 to route 100. Do you think the colors will be close to peak in weston? Thanks for any help you can give. Love your site.
I believe you will see color but I don’t think it will be peak. The Routes 7 to 11 to 100 are good routes. past weston follow route 155 for some great views… check this link for covered bridges: http://www.coveredbridgemap.com/vt/
